Test Equipment

Test equipment is the heart of both engineering and production operations. From simple DMMs to oscilliscopes and spectrum analyzers, test equipment is needed to ensure systems are performing as they should and content complies with applicable technical specifications, especially some of the newest specifications around 3D production. With the introduction of sophisticated digital and computer-based systems the need for devices such as network and packet analyzers has grown.

Today's engineers must ensure systems are operating at a variety of layers. Simple continuity checks lead to closer inspection, often with scopes or waveform monitors. Digging deeper requires analysis of the data packets being transmitted and received. Proper protocol, authentication and routing may all be needed to troubleshoot today's network based system.

Another area of concern in today's multi-format encoding systems is standards compliance and compatibility. MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and PSIP all have unique data structures that must be populated correctly to ensure the signal can be decoded at the other end, and once tdecoded, the content must meet quality control standards. Often, complex systems will work fine with most equipment, but there may be issues with one or two models or chipsets. Getting to the heart of the issue can mean detailed analysis and knowledge of the systems involved. Whether it is hardware, software or system-based, the need for accurate and reliable test equipment through out the production and broadcast chain remains.
