VideoBase S.A. Deploys Grass Valley MEDIAEDGE for In-Store Digital Signage Network in Columbia

Paris, France/Nevada City, Calif. August 24, 2009 – VideoBase S.A., a leading A/V system integration and video production services company in Colombia, South America, has completed installation of the first phase of a nationwide digital signage network for the Almacenes Éxito S.A. Retail Company in Colombia that is based on a Grass Valley™ MEDIAEDGE®3 digital content delivery system.

This major project, which was completed in October 2008 and now supports 20 stores located in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla, is designed to distribute standard- and high-definition content from a main MEDIAEDGE3 content server located in Medellín. From that centralized location, the 20 stores of the retail chain’s content is managed via a dedicated TCP/IP network and displayed using dozens of Grass Valley MEDIAEDGE STB3 set-top boxes linked to Panasonic displays inside each participating store.

“The Grass Valley MEDIAEDGE system allows the Almacenes Éxito Supermarket chain to receive new revenue by providing customers with constantly updated content and advertising,” said Ignacio Restrepo, President and Chief Executive at VideoBase S.A. “The system is very easy to deploy and can be upgraded and expanded as necessary without much effort. As our clients come to recognize the value, we see a big demand for the Grass Valley MEDIAEDGE system and will soon install more systems for Almacenes Éxito and other clients.”

The flexibility of the network enables different Almacenes Éxito stores, and different displays within the same store, to receive different content, based on individual sales strategies. The overall plan is to include approximately 480 stores of various companies countrywide over the next two years, employing dozens of MEDIAEDGE3 servers and about 2,000 MEDIAEDGE set-top boxes.

“The power of the MEDIAEDGE3 platform lies in its flexibility to distribute content quickly and efficiently, thereby providing a quick return on investment for retailers,” said Jeff Rosica, Senior Vice President of Grass Valley. “Grass Valley is also constantly updating the MEDIAEDGE platform to include the latest features for advancing the digital signage category and in-store video advertising.”

The Grass Valley MEDIAEDGE3 video over IP system consists of a MEDIAEDGE3 Server with management software and several MEDIAEDGE STB3 units. The system uses the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) protocol for the management of the hundreds of displays within the stores and dedicated software for digital content management.

Currently, VideoBase S.A. on the digital signage network program of the Almacenes Éxito supermarket chain uses MEDIAEDGE STB3 set-top box players in its stores and will eventually incorporate the Grass Valley HDMA4100 set-top box player in order to display HD content.

Grass Valley representative Videoelec S.A., located in Bogotá, Colombia, coordinated the equipment purchase at VideoBase S.A. for this project.
