Cabela's Adopts Sony's XDCAM Prpfessional Disc For Its TV Show

PARK RIDGE, N.J., June 23, 2005 - The outdoor clothing and accessories on sale from Cabela's are designed to withstand rigorous adventure. Now the same can be said of the retailer's professional video equipment, centered around Sony's blue-laser, optical disc-based XDCAM™ Professional Disc™ system.

The Cabela's chain of 12 retail stores carries an array of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. It also produces a weekly magazine-format television show called "Cabela's Outfitter Journal." The company recently began using several of the XDCAM camcorders and decks to give its production crews more flexibility on location to capture action shots and to enhance the show's overall image quality. The technology is also used by Cabela's to produce videos for internal use.

According to Cabela's TV producer Phillip Shuyler, the goal of the show is to not only promote the company's products, but also to provide consumers with informative tips and features about the outdoor lifestyle. The shows are hosted by knowledgeable outdoor personalities and Cabela's employees.

"Depending on the time of year, the shows are devoted to either hunting or fishing," Shuyler said. "Most of the footage is shot on location, but there are also some interview sequences that we produce in the studio, so we need an acquisition technology that provides top-notch images and performs under a variety of environmental conditions. The XDCAM system meets these needs perfectly."

One feature the crews have taken advantage of is cache recording. This feature allows the XDCAM camcorders to continuously record 10 seconds of video, audio and metadata in memory while in standby mode. Then, when the record button is pushed, these previous 10 seconds and all associated data are automatically recorded onto the Professional Disc media and the camcorder will continue recording in real time.

"If we're out on a boat during a fishing episode," Shuyler said, "often we're waiting and waiting for a fish to be hooked and when it happens we have to be ready. With this cache capability, we're confident we will never miss a key shot, action sequence or sound byte."

The XDCAM system can also help to reduce overall production costs for a show like "Cabela's Outfitter Journal," since crews are not constantly rolling tape to capture footage that may never even be used.

The camcorders have also been able to withstand any temperature or weather condition. "Being an outdoors show, obviously we're shooting in varying conditions," said Shuyler. "We've had the camcorders in cold, heat, humidity and all types of precipitation, and they've always performed for us."

The XDCAM system's Professional Disc media is also a benefit to the crews. The 12-inch (5cm) optical discs offer increased portability over videotape and are packaged in specially designed durable cartridges resistant to dust, shock and scratches—extremely useful characteristics for an outdoors-themed TV show.

Shuyler also noted that using a disc-based system is advantageous for transferring footage from the camcorders and into the studio's editing system. "The footage is already digitized, so that process is eliminated, saving us valuable time," he said.
