RTL Utilizes Mediornet At Formula One

Las Vegas, Nevada (April 12, 2010). – RTL, one of the most successful German broadcast networks and responsible for the German broadcast of the Formula 1 championship, uses a MediorNet installation for the broadcast of the current 2010 Formula 1 season. The MediorNet installation connects the new RTL commentator booth with the MCR and various other locations.

A total of four MediorNet frames are being used at each Formula 1 race. The commentator booth is equipped with one MediorNet frame that is linked to the master control room via a single CWDM connection integrating four HD/ SDI video signals and five AES signals for connecting Artist 1000 series control panels. The panel’s second audio channel is used for broadcast quality commentator audio in addition to the intercom application.

Furthermore the remote control panel for the digital Thomson GV crosspoint switcher is intelligently integrated via MediorNet. Four HD/SDI video signals are routed back to the master control room from the booth. A third MediorNet frame integrates the tapeless video archive server in the network.

A fourth MediorNet frame at the RTL race office integrates two HD/SDI video signals and two Artist 1000 series control panels via a single fiber link into the network. The connection to the Lawo Nova digital audio router for the broadcast audio that is used at the races is accomplished via a MADI link.

In addition to MediorNet, RTL is using Riedel’s MPLS data services for the live broadcast of the 2010 Formula 1 season. The Riedel MPLS solution provides a customized Video-over-IP service allowing for live broadcast from all over the world. It replaces the former satellite link from the racetracks to RTL’s main facility in Cologne, Germany. This results in a versatile solution, which also provides a return feed as well as a secure network connection.
