Conformalizer Keeps Kong In Sync

Maggot Software, developers of software solutions for sound-post professionals, today announced that its flagship application, the Conformalizer, has been used on Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong to keep the soundtrack in sync with the constantly changing picture.

Maggot Software Head Developer Justin Webster says the Oscar winning sound post production team were under enormous time pressure and required very fast, accurate conforming of their Pro Tools sessions, ADR databases and console automation.

"The sound editorial team were facing a large number of changes on a daily basis, often incorporating many VFX updates, so they needed a tool which would give them the flexibility to fine tune the re-conform before committing it to dozens of sessions, thousands of database records and enormous console automation files."

King Kong Sound Designer Dave Whitehead says the conformalizer saved hundreds of hours and many embarrassing moments on the mix stage.

"With so many Visual FX shots and so much of the action contained in the VFX, we had to be very careful about small changes in sync which could easily go unnoticed. The conformalizer allowed us to instantly see not only the editorial changes but also any updated VFX shots. We could even run the two Quicktimes against each other to see exactly what had changed in the new shot."

Also key to the Kong workflow was the upkeep of the ADR database. according to 1st asst. sound editor Martin Kwok thousands of lines of dialog were spotted to early versions of the picture and required constant updating in case they were needed for looping at a later date.

"When a new cut came in we often had to get the ADR scripts conformed and out the door in a matter of minutes so they could be transferred to China or Los Angeles or wherever the talent was that day. Entire scenes would drop out of the cut only to reappear in another reel several versions later. I hate to think what that would have been like without the Conformalizer. "
