Concert Hall Studio in Stuttgart

Concert Hall Studio in Stuttgart

SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir productions on mc²66

The important South-West German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk (SWR) are renovating the control room of their Concert Hall Studio in Stuttgart, and replacing their previous analogue mixing console with a Lawo AG mc²66 console. In making this decision, SWR have placed their trust in Lawo’s modern technology; the digital age of audio is also finding its way into this SWR Concert Hall.

The building, designed by architect Rolf Gutbrod, was erected between 1955 and 1959. The original seating for an audience of 150 is no longer used, as no more public performances are held there. However, the hall still qualifies for high-ranking music events and productions. Resonators and dished wooden plates at the back of the hall give a reverberation time of 1.5 seconds. In addition, since 1986, Perspex reflectors hanging from the ceiling above the stage area enable musicians to hear each other more clearly. The SWR Choir, and particularly the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra, use the concert hall to prepare for public performances and recordings, with the focus being on Renaissance and Contemporary music.

The control room’s new mc²66 mixing console will have 56 faders (24+8+24) and 192 DSP channels. This Lawo console is well-equipped for music production: excellent signal processing, ergonomic control surface, fast and easy changes to settings, perfect matching of DSP resources to production demands, plus maximum availability and reliability — thanks to superb redundancy design; these are only some of the features! With the mc²66 soon to be installed, surround sound productions will now be possible in this facility.

The equipment changes require the control room to be complete rebuilt. As the previous equipment room didn’t offer enough space for new technology, it was demolished and this space was added to the control room. The new equipment room will be set up in a disused presenter suite.

These alterations also require an upgrade to the technical furniture. New panelling is being designed to improve the control room acoustics. Furthermore, the changeover to digital devices necessitates a new lighting system, so that screen-based information can be read without eyestrain.
