OmniBus Automates Time Warner Cable's News 9 San Antonio and News 24 Houston
DENVER -- December 29, 2003 -- OmniBus Systems Inc., a leading provider of comprehensive on-air automation and media asset management solutions to the broadcast industry, today announced that Time Warner Cable has deployed OmniBus broadcast automation systems at News 9 San Antonio and News 24 Houston for rapid production and delivery of round-the-clock local news broadcasts.

At each of the Texas facilities, an OmniBus automation system is integrated with a Pinnacle Systems Vortex video server, AP's ENPS newsroom production system, and VertigoXmedia graphics automation to enable broadcast of local news, weather, and sports delivered in a flexible "wheel" format. Live and recorded segments are aired in a sequential combination dictated by breaking news to provide seamless, up-to-the-minute newscasts for viewers. The OmniBus system serves as the central interface for controlling devices, getting feedback, and relaying playout messages, and the OmniBus Desktop Control (ODC) interface gives users the ability to search and browse archived material, create graphics, put production elements for studio events into a script, and control a variety of other functions from a single desktop.

"OmniBus' automation system allows us to bring the power of technology to our journalists' workstations," said Alan Little, general manager of News 9 San Antonio. "Using the ODC interface to work with ENPS, our staff is able to produce stories quickly and efficiently. The system has allowed us to integrate new toolsets and simplify device control into a simple, responsive desktop production environment that enables newsroom staff to update our run-down in just seconds."

Time Warner Cable has pursued an aggressive rollout schedule for its 24-hour news facilities, and by implementing the same OmniBus-based production template from site to site, it has successfully established local news outlets in Raleigh, Charlotte, Albany, and now the Houston and San Antonio markets. News 24 Houston, which serves the nation's No. 10 market, relies on a line feed record application located at the media manager position to integrate feeds from news bureaus and offices around the city, while News 9 San Antonio receives its feeds from a single bureau. Other than variations in the types of remotes coming in, the new Time Warner Cable facilities operate with the same production systems and workflow.

"OmniBus was a clear choice for our news production systems, given the company's early contributions to the MOS protocol, good relationship with ENPS, and experience in developing and deploying innovative automation systems for leading broadcasters around the globe," said Harlan Neugeboren, vice president of engineering and technology for Time Warner Cable. "OmniBus has demonstrated a deep knowledge of broadcasting's history and an understanding of how to shape its products for the future. We feel confident that the company's dedication to progressive broadcast solutions will continue to advance our ability to deliver the highest-quality news product."
