 | On Demand Television Nets First Emmy Awards As It Reaches Millions of Cable Viewers
NEW YORK ( Nov. 16, 2004 ) – The prestigious National Television Academy acknowledged the widespread emergence of Video-On-Demand (VOD) as it bestowed its first-ever Emmy Awards in this category last night. The “Big Three” On Demand technology providers – Concurrent (Nasdaq: CCUR), nCUBE Corp. and SeaChange International (Nasdaq: SEAC) – each collected statuettes during the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards ceremony, which honored their role in bringing on-demand services into the American mainstream.
Concurrent, nCUBE and SeaChange have been instrumental in cable operators’ widespread On Demand deployments, which began in major television markets across the country during 2000. By the end of this year, Forrester Research predicts that over 23 million U.S. cable households will have access to On Demand services 1 comprised of movies, sports, broadcast programming, local news and other content.
“Our committee identifies technologies that have affected television in material ways and Video-On-Demand improves the television watching experience for millions of Americans,” said Seth Haberman, president and CEO, Visible World (and NATAS VOD Investigation Committee Co-Chair). “I've been a member of the Academy, chairing and co-chairing Technical Emmy investigations for 16 years, and I’ve never seen a more deserving technology than VOD. We are pleased to present the Emmy to SeaChange, nCUBE and Concurrent for delivering the technology that enables consumers to have more choice and control in their television experience than ever before.”
Launched in 1948, Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards recognize companies, organizations and individuals for breakthroughs in technology that have a significant effect on television engineering. SeaChange, Concurrent and nCUBE were honored for the “ development, productization, and commercialization of video server technology leading to large scale video-on-demand implementations.” Portions of the Nov. 15 awards ceremony will be broadcast on “Pulse,” the G4TechTV cable network news program, on Nov. 19 at 10 PM ET/PT .
