Although some programs are still done live, the majority of content is recorded, stored and played back multiple times before it reaches viewers. Storage and playback systems are critical to broadcast operations, and while tape is giving way to disk-based systems, the fact remains that versatile, cost-effective storage and workflows are an integral part of a successful operation.
News and production operations require a storage media that can be taken to the field, edited and delivered to air on relatively tight schedules. Cameras that support file-based workflows, faster than real time transfers and the ability to target peripheral applications such as the web and mobile devices are more important than ever before. Depending on the application, multiple, simultaneous I/O capability may be needed. Longer format production systems may require ganged playout for 3D, key or multi-screen playout.
Choices abound, but what is right system for you? Budget, application, compression type, overall signal quality, storage capacity and integration into existing workflows are but a few of the items that need to be considered when looking at new storage systems. |
