Production Switchers
Production switchers are central to live production and are used to add key layers and special effects to video. Multiple mix/effect banks are common, as is automated control. Production switchers are primarily used for live applications including sporting events, news and Image Magnification (IMAG) applications such as stadium and concert productions. Quick, easy access to controls and inputs are necessary, as is ease of programming and effects creation. Production switchers are sometimes also still found in editing suites as they can provide capabilities and speeds that may not be available in non-linear editing systems. Some have found their way to master control for credit sqeezes and commercial effects.
Some switchers have extremely sophisticated control capabilities to other devices in the control room. These can include routers, servers, tally systems, VTRs, robotic cameras, audio mixers, character generators, still stores and newsroom systems. In some cases, switchers can take on these roles directly. Loading graphics and fonts from USB sticks is a feature found in some of todays switchers. Another unique feature is remote control of the switcher
Most switchers can produce shows in any of the common SD or HD formats and also generally offer a means of converting different input formats. Switchers typically also offer a variety of "clean feed" or "multi program" outputs that allow for "live to tape" or multi-language feeds.
Intuitive workflows, easy reconfiguration and ergonomic controls are the hallmarks of many of today’s production switchers. Control of external devices, extensive DVE effects, as well as sophisticated keying and layering place tremendous creative control in the hands of today’s operators. |
