Master Control Switchers

Master control switchers have evolved from simple but reliable systems that offered audio/video switching and breakaway to sophisticated automation interfaces. While control panels provide a human interface, not all systems require one. Today's switchers must address a growing list of needs including multi-channel capability, multiple standards support for SD/HD switching, graphics capability for logo insertion and DVE capability. Systems must also interface with automation and traffic systems.

Some systems are integral with the routing switcher, and offer signal conversion capability as well as the ability to embed/de-embed audio for multi-channel operations. Integral logo insertion, graphics storage and conversion capabilities can provide efficient workflow and simplify operation.

Now that the deadline for conversion to digital broadcasting in the US has passed, many broadcasters are passing HD through their facilities. While the signal chains are often rudimentary, expectations on signal switching are increasing, and with that, so too are the requirements for new master control switchers.
