Lenses and Accessories
A primary component of any imaging system is the lens. Lens choice ultimately determines the quality and quantity of light that lands on the imager. While fixed focla length lenses remain the primary choice for film and cinematograpy, the zoom lens is the standard for television. Rugged construction and light weight are two key elements for television lenses. Smooth motors, accurate automatic functions and a good fit in the cameraperson's hand all contribute to a lens that is easy to use. Sometimes, especially in news, an easy to use lens can make the difference in getting a quality shot or simply an unrecognizable blur.
For studio use, lenses remain fairly large despite the smaller sizes of today's cameras. Quality mounts are important as an improperly mounted lens can put considerable stress on the mounting interface. Both camera and lens must be tighly secured in proper alignment. Special mounting platforms allow high quality video cameras to use film-style lenses, allowing cinemtographers to take advantage of today's video technology while still keeping with the traditions and workflows found throughout the film industry. |
