Cameras and Camcorders

Cameras and camcorders have long been the mainstay of broadcast operations. Converting a live source to video requires a camera. Today's broadcast-quality cameras provide digital outputs, often offer extensive remote control capability and produce pictures second to none. Studio cameras offer multiple HD output formats, extensive video processing and choices across a wide range of lenses. Remote control is typically over triax or fiber.

For operation outside the studio, field cameras are available in a variety of configurations. Most units are camcorders that offer built-in record capability. While tape recorders are still available, units that offer disc and solid state recording are quickly becoming the norm. Some field cameras do not have recording capability and offer high-quality images from a small package. Many of these units can be mounted inside of a larger "studio" configuration.

Numerous factors must be considered when selecting the right camera for your operation. Obviously, size and weight play a role when picking both cameras and tripods. For field units, battery size and weight, as well as intended use are very important. External connections such as DC power, monitor video, genlock, audio inputs and audio monitor outputs are all items that should be carefully investigated to ascertain the camera's compatibility with its intended use.

Workflow is now playing an important role, especially in camcorder selection. How footage is recorded, and on what media, is critical to efficient workflow. Documentary shoots that produce hundreds of hours of footage, and allow considerable time for post are completely different than news operations that may produce only a few minutes of footage, but only allow minimal time for editing. Today's camera systems are a single critical item in a larger workflow, and should be carefully evaluated as such.
