Automation Systems
Automation systems within broadcast facilities have gone through several generations. Early systems simply sequenced carts, whereas today's systems can provide a complete automated workflow. From recording satellite feeds to automated playout of programs and spots, automated systems are critical to the efficient operation of today's multi-stream facility. Third-party compatibility is critical, as integration with back-office traffic and billing systems and viewer facing systems such as EPG and PSIP can make all the difference.
Key to automation's success is the cost savings made possible by staff and error reduction. Notice it is staff reduction, not staff elimination. Automation systems and on-air operations do require a significant amount of care and feeding. Programs and spots must be ingested, quality control performed and error conditions remedied. Today's operators must be computer savvy and skilled in the detailed operation of the system. System crashes, though rare, and live events require quick thinking and the ability to adjust on the fly.
Automation systems need to support multi-channel origination and share content and spots across multiple output channels targeting multiple viewing devices including big TVs, small TVs, and mobile devices such as cellphones, iPods and automobile based TVs. Larger automation systems nearly always require integration. Whether it is to the traffic and billing system, storage systems or video servers, one way or another, external files and data must be imported and as-run files exported. Smaller systems also exist that offer smaller feature sets and an all-in-one box approach. These systems are perfect for small operations that may not have the resources available to watch a system 24/7/365. All-in-One broadcast server solutions become more powerful all the time. The newest servers import play-list directly from traffic and billing systems and output XML TV metadata for use by electronic program guide (EPG) systems. Whether your requirements are large or small, make sure the system you choose fits into your current or future workflow. |
