Transmit Antennas
Antennas may be considered simple devices, as they are often purchased, placed into position and largely forgotten, however, they are of primary importance to the broadcaster. The antenna is the final item in the broadcast chain. As such, the characteristics and placement of the antenna ultimately determine where and how the signal will be receiveable. Pattern peaks and nulls need to be oriented to maximumize the signal strength available to the population served. Nothing is worse than advertising a new and improved signal, then placing the antenna and finding out that an outlying community can no longer receive your signal.
When considering a tranmit antenna, frequency, power handling, gain and mounting position are among the primary considerations. Frequency has often been pre-determined by the licensing authority. Typically, power handling and gain go hand in hand. The more power you have at the base of the antenna, the less gain you need. Mounting positions fall into two categories, top and side, with candelabras being a common variant of the top mount.
