Radio Transmitters, Translators
Transmitters exist in a variety of configurations and power levels. Today's most sophisticated designs offer computer-based control of solid state amplifiers. Most are air-cooled but other options also exist. Considerations such as size and weight can play roles beyond installation, and are important factors to consider. Larger models may take up more room in the transmitter building, but may make maintenance much more efficient.
With HD Radio upon us, upgrades to existing equipment are important. If you purchase a new rig today, how easy will it be to upgrade in the future? How is the associated equipment such as the power supply and harmonic filter packaged? Are they internal to the unit, or is additional floor space required? Are they easily maintained in the event of a problem?
While many current designs are tried and true, do they offer the features needed for broadcasting well into the 21st century? All these are important questions that need to be addressed as for many the purchase of a new transmitter is a rare event, the consequences of which will have to be lived with for many years to come.
