Time code

Time code has been an integral part of broadcast facilities for years. While there may be alternative timing references, SMPTE time code is still a requirement for many operations such as editing and playout. Nothing provides a frame accurate reference like time code. It can be distributed as data, audio and even burned into video as a reference.

often today, being on exact reference time can be more of a problem than a solution. In part, this is because the signal delays inherent in satellite and telco distribution can cause issues when switching breaks based on GPS time. An offset equivalent to the delay allows the switch to take place in line with the network. Facilities tied to multiple networks can find themselves dealing with multiple offsets.

When considering time code products, often the requirements are specific, as there is a problem that needs specific signals for the solution. Once that is determined, consider your entire facility's timing references and where they will need to evolve in the coming years. Will you need offset's? More than one? What about network time (NTP)? What will your reference be? All are questions that when answered can help you purchase the right equipment for now and the future.
