SNMP Monitoring Tools

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used throughout IT facilities for systems monitoring. Using SNMP within broadcast has increased over the last few years as networked systems have become an integral part of many facilities. As facilities become more complex, increasingly sophisticated monitoring tools are needed to ensure systems are functioning properly.

Implementing an SNMP system can be challenging. Several questions are central to the implementation including:
  • What is the primary goal for the monitoring system?
  • Will you be monitoring hardware? Workflow?
  • Which systems will by monitored? Why?
  • How will alarms be conveyed to the operators and engineers?
  • Are all systems SNMP capable? If not, how will non-capable systems be integrated?
  • Who will manage the system going forward?
Adding SNMP monitoring to a broadcast facility adds another layer of complexity, but like most of today’s technology, that additional complexity can actually simplify day-to-day operations and improve overall uptime. By proactively monitoring systems and operations, small problems can be caught early and corrected before they turn into major problems.
