Power and Surge Protection
While broadcast and production facilities have always required clean uninterrupted power, the need today is greater than ever. Everyone is familiar with equipment lost due to power surges. Whether the surge was a result of lightning or the aftermath of a power failure, once the damage is done, there is plenty of work to do.
Keeping in-facility power clean and uninterrupted requires a disciplined, multi-step approach. Generators and battery backup systems can answer the first challenge; the uninterupted portion. Keeping the power they produce and the switch from one power source to another clean is the next challenge. For the most part, a well designed UPS will also provide clean power, even during switchver. Lightning then becomes the primary producer of unintended surges.
The energy from a lightning strike cannot usually be dissipated in a single spot. Disciplined grounding practices will catch the majority of the spike, and are a first line of defense. Distance and inductance that result from internal wiring will reduce the spike further. Additional protection can be added near the equipment to condition the power and dissapate any remaining energy. |
