Intercoms

With today's feature-laden electronics, one might think that cell phones, walkie-talkies, or even a facility's phone system might be a reasonable replacement for an intercom. During live productions, nothing could be further from the truth. Voice activated communications are required for live events. Today's systems offer a variety of features including multiple channels, transmission over IP and wireless networks as well as alphanumeric readouts for fast, accurate operation.

When purchasing an intercom system, factors such as number of remote stations, number of channels, transmission (analog, digital, wireless or IP) all need to be considered. Live broadcasts and studio productions have similar requirements: Events need to happen on time, and unexpected things always go wrong. Keeping productions on track requires the ability to quickly communicate changes to those who need to know, whether they are crew, talent (through IFBs) or both. All-call buttons as well as easily-accessed group buttons are invaluable.

Headsets and mic booms need to be durable to stand up to multiple uses every day. Easily replaceable cords, connectors and buttons can increase the life of headsets and reduce repair costs over the life of the system. Paying for quality components at the beginning can provide repeated returns in both reduced costs and downtime.

In addition to the price of components, consider also the complete cost of ownership. Wiring and installation costs are a factor often forgotten when comparing different solutions. Decentralizing the system is one approach that can reduce installation requirements. Scalability should also be considered, as it allows for a reduced initial investment. Hardware-based systems that use the same type of client and processing cards in various mainframes, also reduce the TCO by reducing the number of spare parts. Last but not least, user training and maintenance efforts are also cost factors that need to be taken into account. In the long run, modern easy to use and easy to configure systems can create extra value and lower operational costs.
