Cabling and Connectors
Cabling and connectors are the primary means of moving signals around facilities. For years, facilities have relied on 75ohm coaxial cable and shielded twisted pair for audio. With digital, much of the shielded audio cable has been replaced by embedding the audio within the video signal and/or using coax or fiber for audio. As networking finds its way deeper into facilities, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is carrying more and more audio and video traffic as packetized data.
Connectors have also changed. Precision 75 ohm BNCs are now rated for 3Gb/s signals. Audio connections still use XLRs, but todays digital signals allow multiple channels on a single XLR or BNC. In the end, BNCs on coax and RJ45 connectors on Cat5e cable are most the most likely cable and connector combinations of the future. |
