Routing Switchers (audio only)
While many of today's routing switchers often offer numerous levels, the need for audio only routers still remains. Technology has advanced far beyond the simple crosspoint matrix. Most of today's systems take advantage of IP networking and packetized data to allow transport of audio on Cat 5. In most instances, frame-based systems offer I/O modules that provide the necessary connections. Many of these routers operate as the engine behind today's mixing consoles.
Signal conversion and processing are common in the larger units. Also found are networking/routing features such as VLAN tagging, DNS and DHCP. Capabilities such as these are becoming more and more common in today's facilities, and in a smaller facility, the ability to have many of the needed functions in a single unit pays numerous rewards in terms of simplified setup, configuration and maintenance.
