Audio Meters and Monitors

Virtually gone are the days of a single analog VU meter set at 0dB. Instead, today's audio meters are highly sophisticated devices. Often capable of displaying more than 8 discrete channels simultaneously, most go beyond simple bar graphs and offer customized displays of analog and digital multi-channel signals. Many have built in decoders and offer conversion to analog for either internal speakers or external amplifiers/speakers.

Obviously, the meters must suit your needs to be effective. Different scales are used for analog and digital environments, and reference levels may vary based on the facility. Meter configurations are based on the application; stereo, surround, multilanguage and others. Consideration should also be given to different types of monitoring such as the differences between peak values and perceived loudness, or the differences between live and production environments. Of course, engineers have different needs than operators. User presets allow a single meter to perform a variety of functions easily.

Careful consideration also needs to be given to future needs. Audio interfaces for SDi vs. AES and other standards are typically hardware dependent, and while feature sets may be software upgradable, changing to a new audio standard may require more than a software update. Additionally, as network devices and network audio become ubiquitous, the ablity to view, and often hear, audio information from a computer desktop becomes even more important.
